KARACHI: Pakistani cricketers, hoping to get clearance to feature in the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), seemed to have overcome another hurdle after the Foreign Ministry declared that it won’t object to their participation in the cash-rich spectacle.
However, the Ministry has also made it clear that the government will only be able to take a final decision on giving a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the country’s IPL hopefuls once the Interior Ministry issues a security clearance.
Several of Pakistan’s leading cricketers are hoping to play in the third edition of IPL after missing this year’s contest because of strained Pakistan-India relations.
Last month, the IPL extended the deadline for Pakistan’s players to submit the relevant documents needed to ensure their participation in the league’s next season.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is supporting the case of the players and has requested the Sports Ministry to obtain clearance for the players from the relevant authorities.
The deadline for the PCB to submit the NOCs and other documents to enable the Pakistan players to take part in the 2010 tournament was extended to December 7.
So far, a total of three Pakistani players — Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir and Abdul Razzaq — have applied for NOCs to play in the IPL.
According to sources, following the Foreign Ministry’s decision to grant political clearance to the cricketers, it is expected that the Interior Ministry will also follow suit in issuing a security clearance to the players.
