IPL fever grips global cricket fans

The IPL fever has gripped cricket fans across the world as well. According to a statement from the IPL, the IPL channel on YouTube has had eight million hits so far, including 5.2 million views. The official Web site also reported 15 million exclusive hits.

“For IPL 2010 to garner such an encouraging global response bears testimony to the fact that fans in India and around the world were eagerly awaiting the return of IPL back home,” said Mr Lalit Modi, Commissioner, Indian Premier League.

“With more than five million fans tuning into the DLF IPL season opener on YouTube, more than 15 million page views on www.iplt20.com , a TVR of 6.95 and sources at various mobile operators estimating the SMS traffic during the match to be well over 12 million SMS on their short-codes alone, we are thrilled that fans are taking to the multiple delivery platforms on offer to track their favourite teams,” he added.

According to TAM Sports Rating, the season opener between Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders got a rating of 6.95 compared with 5.55 for the previous season opener against South Africa. The match was witnessed by 19.9 million people, according to the TAM Sports Rating report.

The tournament's international appeal was captured in the British TV viewership figures.

The tournament is being shown for the first time on free-to-air terrestrial television in the UK via ITV4. According to BARB figures, the channel's peak viewing during the season opener saw as many as 479,000 viewers watching the match.

Going by the initial figures the IPL is off to a flyer, only time will tell whether the interest is sustained.
