PCB not delaying development of pitches in Sri Lanka

ISLAMABAD—The delay is not on the part of Pakistan Cricket Board regarding development of three international standard turf pitches in one of Sri Lanka famous 135-year old school, a PCB Spokesman said on Thursday.“PCB wishes to clarify that the delay has not been on part of PCB”, he said, adding that PCB has been constantly in contact with Sri Lanka Cricket. In this regard PCB has written letters to Sri Lanka cricket on 28th April, and again on 1st June, 2009 in which Sri Lankan cricket was asked to send us the details and cost structure of this project. In May 2009 Chairman Sri Lanka Cricket advised PCB that they had identified the area for laying the turf pitches and they would shortly send us a cost structure. However they have so far not provided any details PCB. PCB again approached Sri Lanka cricket and asked them to provide us the details so that PCB may move ahead with honoring its commitment of laying these pitches. During Chairman PCB’s Visit to Sri Lanka in August, 2009 Chairman PCB again reminded Chairman Sri Lanka Cricket to provide details to PCB. Sri Lanka Cricket Promised to provide the details. In a recent correspondence with Sri Lanka Cricket they have again promised to get back to PCB with more details on this project very shortly. “PCB will provide all necessary assistance as and when the requisite information is received from Sri Lanka”, the Spokesman concluded.—Agencies

Andrew Flintoff may never play again: Flower
London—England team director Andy Flower, on Thursday, made a dreaded confession that talismanic all-rounder Andrew Flintoff may never play international cricket ever again. The injury-plagued all-rounder, who retired from Test cricket after the Ashes, is currently recovering from his latest bout of surgery on a knee problem.The 31-year-old Lancashirian had recently made public his intention to becoming the best one-day player in the world and winning the World Cup for England. flower remains cautious on the possibility of Flintoff returning to international action. “I really hope he does (return),” he said. “If he can come back and play one-day international and Twenty20 cricket for us and bat at six or seven and bowl like he can bowl, that will make us a force to be reckoned with in one-day cricket.””Whether he will or not I don`t know, I just hope he does.”—Agencies

Croatia, Belarus miss key players in their World Cup qualifier
ZAGREB—Both Croatia and Belarus will miss some key players when they face each other in their World Cup qualifying match on Saturday. Croatia midfielder Luka Modric broke his right fibula last week playing for Tottenham and will be sidelined for at least six weeks. Belarus will be without captain Alexander Hleb, who has a right hip muscle inflammation. Belarus coach Berndt Stange vowed that his team's goal is "to take revenge" in Zagreb for a 3-1 loss to Croatia in Minsk last month. Greipel wins fifth stage to take Tour of Spain lead
VINAROS—Germany's Andre Greipel took the golden jersey as overall leader of the Tour of Spain after recording his second consecutive stage win here on Friday. The Team Columbia rider came from behind with just metres to go to beat Belgium's Tom Boonen and Italy's Daniele Bennati in a sprint at the end of the 174-kilometre race from Tarragona to Vinaros in northeastern Spain. The stage was held amid scorching temperatures that reached 38 C (100 F), a contrast to the rain on Tuesday when Greipel won the treacherous 225-kilometre fourth stage between Venlo in the Netherlands and Liege in Belgium. The 27-year-old takes over as Tour leader from Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara, who had led since the time trial on first day on Saturday.
