LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain and coach Javed Miandad has suggested that a break from international cricket was the best way for an out-of-form cricketer to regain form and rhythm.
Replying to a question that the performances of some senior batsmen, especially Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq, in Sri Lanka were dismal, Miandad, who has recently been appointed PCB batting adviser, without mentioning anyone’s name said a bad patch was part and parcel of a players’ life and in order to come out of it, the best way was to take a respite from cricket for some time.
Miandad, was speaking to the media after giving tips to U-16 players at the coaching camp set up at the National Cricket Academy.
He said if a player was not performing well, he should stay away from cricket until he gets the urge to play again.
Miandad, also director general of the PCB, however, was diplomatic when asked what should be the criteria for the selectors to select the national squad for the forthcoming Champions Trophy, since the last performance of many seniors in Sri Lanka was not impressive.
‘It is the job of the selectors to select the national squad and my job is only to give tips to improve their performance,’ he ponted out.
‘I am ready to help out Pakistan cricket by all means and to the best of my abilities,’ he added.
It seems the selectors are in a quandary as to how to select the squad since almost all the seniors failed in Sri Lanka, losing the three-Test series 2-0 and five ODIs 3-2.
Since they have to submit the selection list to the ICC latest by Saturday, they do not have sufficient time to check the performance of other players, who were not on the Sri Lankan tour.
As trainer David Dwyer had declared that the cricketers need rest after back-to-back events (T20 World Cup and Sri Lankan tour), it is not possible for the selectors to hold any training camp to pick up the squad.
Commenting on the future of fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, Miandad said the doors were open for all the players to show their performance on the ground and get their place confirmed.
‘I believe that your performance should speak instead of you,’ remarked Miandad, without alluding to Shoaib.
About the available talent in the camp, Miandad said all the boys were talented and he gave tips to all bowlers as well as batsmen.
He added this was the best age to learn about the game and hopefully the boys would not waste such an opportunity.
The former captain said he would also give tips to the national senior team when they start their training for the Champions Trophy, which is being held in South Africa from Sept 22.
