LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif has said that present skipper Younis Khan is asking him to join the coaching set up for the national team. “Younis has been asking me for the past year to join the coaching set-up for the national team. However, I am too busy with my academies and now the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Karachi. As well as that, add family commitments and it will be very difficult to find the time to take on such a coaching role,” Rashid told Pakpasion.net.
Rashid, who represented Pakistan in 37 Tests and 166 ODIs, said it would be fantastic to work with Intikhab Alam, a coach who has helped Pakistan win two World Cups. “In fact I will be honoured. But at this moment I am undecided about the role and also nobody at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has actually sat down and talked about the role with me. Maybe once I talk with the PCB, things will be a bit clearer,” he added. To a question regarding fast bowler Mohammad Asif, Rashid said the pacer was progressing at a training camp in Karachi. “We have a gradual plan for Asif. He is working very hard and I firmly believe that he has learnt his lessons. And after this camp I intend to give Asif back to Pakistan.”
Rshid said Asif had not played international cricket for a while now and it was not easy to stage a come back after such a long absence. “The other thing the selectors need to look at is that the ICC Champions Trophy will be played in high altitude. Do they want Asif to make his comeback in such conditions? We will provide the PCB with a comprehensive report on Asif once the camp terminates on August 29.” Regarding new batting sensation Umar Akmal, Rashid said Umar was someone who had not come through the academy system but he was a fantastic talent. “And if he continues to work hard on his game he will do very well.” About the Pakistan team’s performance recently in Sri Lanka, Rashid had some stern words for the team. “The passion just was not there. The team seemed overconfident,” he said.
