Miandad eager to impart batting skills to youngsters

LAHORE: Reiterating that he remains ever ready for boosting national cricket, former Pakistan captain and batting legend Javed Miandad who has been named batting consultant by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently, insisted he would be imparting his skills to senior as well as Under-23, 19 and 16 players.
Miandad, who also worked as national coach in three different spells in the past, was given the new assignment as the batting consultant by the PCB Governing Board at its meeting in Karachi on Thursday.

Miandad, a Governing Board member, is also working as Director General of the PCB and adviser to the Chairman Ijaz Butt.

Talking to Dawn, Miandad said he was ready to play any role in order to promote the game in the country.

He insisted that his main target was to improve batting skills of the senior and Under-19 players who would be representing Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa and Junior World Cup in January-February in New Zealand, respectively.

Saying though senior players were much experienced, work was to be done on the newly inducted lot in the national side.

To a question, Miandad said he had been offered the national coaching job in the past, but refused as he was not mentally ready for it. Miandad, a 124-Test veteran, denied his new role indicated his relationship with the PCB chief was improving.

‘Ijaz Butt is our elder and I have great respect for him; we are already enjoying good relations,’ he said. It may be mentioned here that Miandad, who has also represented Pakistan in 233 One-day Internationals, had resigned as director general PCB due to a limited role offered to him in the contract.

But later, he joined the PCB on better package and with an additional role of adviser to the PCB chairman.

However, even after the reappointment, Miandad was no where in the national and international cricketing affairs, despite the fact the PCB chairman was involved in defending Pakistan case over the 2011 World Cup matches and the situation arose after the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.

Miandad was also ignored when the chairman appointed Basit Ali for giving batting tips to the national team taking part in the World Twenty20.

Commenting on the possible appointment of former Test opener Saeed Anwar as batting coach on regular basis, Miandad said the idea was good.

But sources said the idea of naming Miandad as batting adviser did not come from the PCB chief and, Wazir Ali Khoja, one of the Governing Board members, put forward his name.

Sources said when the Governing Board members were discussing Pakistan team’s performance in Sri Lanka, batting failures was spotted as the weakest area.

Upon it Wazir suggested that in the presence of a fine batsman like Miandad, the PCB should take benefit from his experience, and the idea was endorsed by all.
